      Travel Information

Air:  The nearest airport is in Aspen, (ASE) reached from most cities through Denver.  However, during the winter ski season, there are some non-stop flights to Aspen from a few other cities.  The airport is only 25 minutes from us, and we will be happy to pick you up there, but please arrange for this beforehand.  A further option is to fly into Eagle County Airport, about 65 miles from the monastery, and take a limousine to “Old” Snowmass.  The advantage of this option is that the Eagle County Airport,(EGE) which serves Vail, accommodates larger planes flying non-stop from many cities in the U.S.  Check with your travel agent regarding convenience and cost.  Perhaps the most economical option is to fly to Denver(DEN) and rent a car or take a shuttle van to “Old” Snowmass.  Colorado Mountain Express runs a regular service between Denver and Aspen.  Phone 1-800-525-6363 to make a reservation.

We use the name “Old” Snowmass to differentiate it from Snowmass Village, which is a ski resort closer to Aspen.  You will not see signs listing Old Snowmass, nor will you find it on a map.  Our “Old” Snowmass is simply the real Snowmass, but we locals often add “Old” in order to avoid confusion.

Ground:  Both Amtrak and Greyhound have stations in Glenwood Springs, about 35 miles from the monastery. There is local bus service (RFTA) which runs about every hour between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, and most of the buses stop at Olde Snowmass.  You need to check their schedule for specifics regarding times and locations.  The trip takes about 45 minutes.  Since Snowmass is only six miles from the monastery, we can easily pick you up there.  If you have a cell phone, you can call us from the Snowmass General Store and U.S. Post Office complex.  Arrangements can also be made in advance for someone to pick you up at the General Store (Deli), the Aspen Airport, or Glenwood Springs, when necessary.

Automobile:  Take Interstate 70 to Glenwood Springs.  Then take Colorado Highway 82 toward Aspen.  Approximately 4 miles past Basalt on Highway 82 is the tiny town of Snowmass (see above explanation), which consists of a Conoco service station, a post office, and a general store  Turn right at the Conoco/post office/Snowmass Deli complex onto Snowmass Creek Road.  After 1.8 miles on this winding road, you come to a T.  (Dead ahead is the “Lazy O Ranch.”)  Take a right onto Capitol Creek Road.  Stay on this road, keeping to the left at the Y you soon encounter.  After a little over 3 miles you will see our large, wooden sign on the left, pointing to the monastery.

Turn left at this sign, which stands by our ranch buildings complex, and proceed ¾ mile.  On your left is our Gatehouse, a stone, ranch style house.  Just past it is a large sign indicating the road up the hill to the Retreat House.  The first turn leads to the parking area for the main building, and the upper road to your right, leads to the hermitages.
